Teaching Kids About God's Love: Free Printable Craft and Devotional

At Messages from Christ, we believe in making Bible stories come alive for kids through hands-on activities that nurture both faith and creativity. One of the best ways to help children grow in their love for Jesus is by connecting the stories they hear in church or at home with something they can see, touch, and create.

Today, we're excited to share a fun and meaningful craft that will help your child connect with one of our favorite Bible stories—the Parable of the Lost Sheep.

The Lost Sheep: A Story of God’s Love

In Luke 15:3-7, Jesus tells the story of a shepherd who has 100 sheep but loses one. The shepherd leaves the 99 safe in the field to find the one lost sheep. When he finds it, he rejoices and calls his friends to celebrate. Jesus shares this parable to show us how much God loves each one of us, even when we stray. He will always come after us, bringing us back into His loving arms.

This story reminds us that no matter what happens, we are never too far from God’s love. He will always seek us out, just like the shepherd in the story.

A Craft to Remember the Lost Sheep

We’ve created a simple craft to help your child visualize the story of the lost sheep and understand how deeply God cares for them. The craft uses simple materials and includes a free printable template that you can download below.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Printable "Lost Sheep" template (download below)

  • Scissors

  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

  • Glue or tape

  • A cotton ball or small pieces of cotton fabric (optional for the sheep’s wool)

  • A small piece of string or ribbon for hanging the craft (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Print the "Lost Sheep" template (found at the end of this post).

  2. Have your child color the shepherd, the sheep, and the hills. This is a great opportunity to talk about the story as they color!

  3. After coloring, cut out the shepherd and the sheep.

  4. If you have cotton balls or fabric, glue them to the sheep for extra texture.

  5. You can also cut out small hills or grass to glue on the bottom of your craft to complete the scene.

  6. For extra fun, use a piece of string or ribbon to hang the finished craft in your child’s room as a reminder of how much God loves them.

A Devotional to Pair with the Craft

As your child completes their craft, take a few moments to reflect on the story together. Here’s a simple devotional you can read with your child:

"God loves each one of us."

  • Bible Verse: "I tell you that in the same way, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." — Luke 15:7

  • Reflection: Just like the shepherd in the story, God loves each of us so much that He will go after us when we wander away. No matter what, God will always seek us out and bring us back to Him.

  • Prayer: "Dear God, thank You for loving me even when I make mistakes. Help me to remember that You are always with me, no matter where I go. Amen."
